Happy Birthday, Little Richard!

Can it really be that Little Richard is 73 years old today? I can remember when those early 45s came out: "Good Golly, Miss Molly," "Tutti Frutti," "Shake a Hand," "Miss Ann," "Rip it Up," "Long Tall Sally," "The Girl Can't Help It," "Lucilee," "Ooh, My Soul," and on and on. It seems like only yesterday. What more can I say? Just this: " Wop bop a loo bop a lop bam boom!"

I kinda sorta met Little Richard once when I was in LA. It was the day Gene Autrey died, and I was walking down Hollywood Boulevard looking for his star (I found one of them, eventually) and a limo suddenly pulls up and rolls down the window. Little Richard sticks his head out, all makeup and grins. Two women walking there go absolutely bonkers. "IT'S LITTLE RICHARD!!!" bonkers, you know? So they're fumbling with their camera, desperate to take a pic while he's doing his mugging schtick. I take pity on them and step up, offering to take their pictures with the star. Little Richard grinned through the whole affair. Talk about a quick way to boost the ol' ego! All ended well and good, although I was afraid we'd have to call an ambulance, they got to hyperventilating so bad.

That's 'cause you're ancient, Bill.

Great Little Richard sighting, Jayme.
