Happy Belated Birthday, Ann-Margret!

Okay, I'm a day late with this, but only because the thought of Ann-Margret turning 65 depressed me so much I didn't post it. I like to think that she's still exactly the way she was when she filmed Kitten with a Whip or Viva Las Vegas. And in fact to me she still is. Take that, Father Time.

All I can say is "Beat me, baby, eight to the bar."

I can't remember the name of that show where the critics were two robots and a dude (Mystery Science Theater?) but one of the funNiest goofs they ever did was on Kitten With a Whip. A lot of the dialogue was risible--especially the juvenile deliquents'--but they really did a job on poor John Forsythe. He was supposed to be devastated when he secretly sent a whispered phone for help but the Mystery Science dialogue was "I must remain bland...I must remain bland." And man it was perfect. Nobody ever looked blander than Forsythe did at that moment of high drama. The book on the other hand was damned good. I know I'm a minority of one when I say that I never found Ann Margaret sexy until "Magic." She always tried too hard. Now Tuesday Weld on the other hand... I remember when a big night time disc jockey in Chicago (where I was working out of in the sixies) got a new record of hers and played about thirty seconds of it and then ripped the needle across it and snapped the 45 in half on the air. (I believe he got canned.) He complained that she was imitating sexiness rather than being sexy. I always thought that was a shrewd comment. But in "Magic," at the beginning of middle age without all the coy Vegas stuff, she was devastatingly beautiful, intelligent and (as the excellent film turns out) heartbreaking. And yes she was 1000% SEXY.

I wish I'd seen that Mystery Science Theater. I didn't know they did that one. Wade Miller did the novel for Gold Medal, and it was a good one, all right.

I'm glad you came around to seeing A-M as sexy.

Could it be that 65 has a personal meaning as well? I certainly wouldn't know anything about that. At least not until next year.

AM was certainly sexy in Viva Las Vegas, especially in the bathing suit.

You're right. That 65 thing is definitely personal.
