When Was the Term "Hard-Boiled" First Applied to Fiction?

Your name was mentioned in a fine hard-boiled collection that I am reading right now, titled of course, "Hard-boiled; An Anthology of American Crime Stories."

Right there on page 257, in the Elmore Leonard preface that is before "3:10 To Yuma."

I'm just getting to 1987 and lo, you're right. You should give Prozini an earful, at the next Boucheron. You were in good company though and most of us would give a piece of anatomy or two to be on the same page as Leonard.
