I Remember

The Writer's Almanac with Garrison Keillor | Head Cheerleader by Jack Ridl: "It was about 12:30 p.m. on this day in 1963 that President John F. Kennedy was fatally shot while riding in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas. It was the first successful assassination of an American president since 1901, and the only presidential assassination ever caught on film. Almost every American alive at the time remembers where they were when they heard the news."

I was sitting in eighth grade science class when the principal made the announcement over the intercom.

I suddenly remembered this morning that today was the 22nd.

I was a sophomore in high school and was between classes when I heard, though naturally the first news was erroneous (Kennedy alive; John Connally dead).

It was Friday about 1 pm EST.

Sunday was my 15th birthday.

I was teaching sophomores in high school when the secretary came around and gave me the word. Okay, it was juniors, but sophomores would make a better story here. It was my first year out of college. Obviously I'm much older than you.

I was a baby.

For me, the "where was I" event a little like this for you was the assassination of John Lennon. I was getting dressed before or after high school gym, and found out from the one fellow student who also would have cared. I asked here why she was wearing a black armband (it had happened the day before), and she told me. We seemed to be the only people in our school that knew or cared.
