Joe Paterno, R. I. P.

NYTimes.com: Joe Paterno, who won more games than any other major-college football coach, and who became the face of Penn State University and a symbol of integrity in collegiate athletics only to be fired during the 2011 season amid a child sexual-abuse scandal that reverberated throughout the nation, died Sunday. He was 85.

Long before the whole Jerry Sandusky story blew up, when sports commentators would ask when will Joe Pa retire, my husband would always say that Paterno would never retire, that his job was what was keeping him alive and he knew it. Apparently, hubby was right.

Wait, I thought that was a hoax?

The sad ending of Paterno is a cautionary tale about staying at the party too long. If Paterno had retired five or ten years ago, his place in sports history would be totally different.
