  1. Whether hack or knock-off artist (both descriptions are patently unfair), his SF books remain early classics of the genre and are more readable than many others of the time. And, of course, Serviss was a well-known populizer of astronomy. In fact, it was because he was so well-known an astronomer, The Boston Post newspaper commissioned Serviss to write Edison's Conquest of Mars as a "sequel" to a previously published and terrible knock-off of Wells' book
